The Yamaha CDC 697 has been one of Yamaha's most popular CD players and actually one of the best selling high end CD players in the market in recent times.
The main selling point for most people is the 5-disk carousel changer. A lot of people have commented to say that it's amazing how hard it is to find decent 5-disc carousel machines these days. This is probably because many companies are now focusing purely on their mp3 docking systems.
Most people want a high end CD player as they simply prefer the feel of having something physical on their shelf to represent the music and also perhaps the fact that you have such a big CD collection that ripping it all to mp3 would take years! The CD is a long way away from dying simply due to the fact that a lot of people still want something tangible in their hands. A lot of purists like to see the artwork and details on the cover.
The trend these days is to get all your music onto an mp3 player and use a docking system. Well even if you have plenty of MP3s I would say you won't need a docking system as you can simply plug your mp3 player into the USB socket on the CDC 697 and you're good to go. The sound quality still comes out just as good and you have almost got 2 machines in one.
The fact that it has a 5 disk makes playing tracks on random selection much easier and you can even use the built in playXchange feature to change over CDs without any interruption. The change around time between tracks is really quick too so no more awkward silences whilst the machine tries to rotate between disks.
